+ Free ShippingWe believe that education is the most valuable contribution osteology can offer, and that each human specimen plays a vital role in advancing scientific knowledge. These specimens are generously provided by retired physicians, medical researchers, dental professionals, and former university medical programs. Additionally, we collaborate with accredited donor programs. A select collection of specimens—often antiques that do not meet the criteria for medical or research-grade use—are made available to osteology enthusiasts around the world, allowing them to continue their educational efforts and share knowledge.
The patella, also known as the kneecap, is a thick, circular-triangular bone which articulates with the femur (thigh bone) and covers and protects the anterior articular surface of the knee joint. The patella is found in many tetrapods, such as mice, cats and birds, but not in whales or most reptiles. In humans, the patella is the largest sesamoid bone in the body. Babies are born with a patella of soft cartilage which begins to ossify into bone at about three years of age.
