The western gray squirrel is a tree rodent species native to forests of the western United States and northwestern Mexico. Squirrel nests are called dreys and can be seen in trees, built from sticks and leaves wrapped with long strands of grass. In recent years, the western gray squirrel has suffered habitat loss due to wild fires and urbanization.
